Centipede & Millipede Control in Rio Rancho

Centipedes vs. Millipedes: How to Tell Them Apart

These two pests are often confused, but their behavior is quite different. Centipedes move fast and hunt other insects for food. If you spot something darting across the floor and disappearing under furniture, it’s likely a centipede. Millipedes move slowly, have a rounder, more worm-like body, and feed on decaying plant material rather than live prey. When disturbed, millipedes curl into a tight coil; centipedes run for the nearest dark corner.

Knowing which pest you’re dealing with helps target the right conditions, though both show up for similar reasons: moisture, shelter, and a food source nearby.

Why Rio Rancho Yards Attract These Pests

Rio Rancho is one of the fastest-growing communities in New Mexico, and the landscaping choices that come with that growth create ideal habitat. Mulch beds, rock borders, leaf litter, and irrigation systems all hold moisture in spots that stay damp long after watering stops. That’s exactly where millipedes feed and where centipedes follow the insects millipedes attract.

In this arid climate, any moisture pocket stands out. Xeriscaped yards with decomposing organic material under rock or gravel are just as hospitable to these pests as traditional landscaping. When outdoor conditions become too hot or dry, both centipedes and millipedes can enter homes through foundation gaps, door sweeps, and utility penetrations.

How We Treat Centipede & Millipede Activity

Effective control starts outdoors. We reduce organic debris, treat mulch beds and foundation perimeters, and apply professional-grade, kid- and pet-friendly products to entry points around the structure. For properties with ongoing moisture or vegetation issues, we pair perimeter treatment with our weed control service to eliminate the ground cover these pests use for shelter. When interior activity is present, we treat inside as well, covering the full scope of the problem rather than part of it.
